The Hummingbird School, nestled in Majuli Island, Assam, confronts a multitude of challenges: geographical isolation, annual floods, poverty, and limited access to basic services. These adversities cast a long shadow over the community, threatening to perpetuate a cycle of hardship. However, the school stands resolute, determined to equip its students not only to thrive in an ever-changing world but also to become the architects of positive change within their community. This unwavering commitment manifests in the school's undeterred focus on nurturing student autonomy, a cornerstone of its educational philosophy for the past seven years.

A Vision Rooted in Empowerment:
The Hummingbird School envisions a future where its students blossom into leaders, lifelong learners, and truth-seekers, individuals who embody courage, compassion, and integrity. A key pathway for the vision translates into fostering student autonomy, empowering them to take ownership of their learning and actively contribute to shaping their school environment and community.

Building a Culture of Student Agency:
The journey towards fostering student autonomy has been one of gradual evolution and continuous refinement. The school has implemented various initiatives, each meticulously tailored to the specific needs and developmental stages of the students.

From Humble Beginnings:
In 2018, the school embarked on this path by introducing weekly meetings for its residential students. These meetings served as a platform for them to address everyday challenges, ranging from maintaining cleanliness in their living quarters to resolving conflicts and addressing damaged furniture. Through facilitated discussions and collaborative problem-solving, students were encouraged to identify solutions, take ownership of their responsibilities, and develop the self-reliance necessary to navigate these challenges effectively.

Evolving with the Times:
The post-pandemic world necessitated a shift in approach. Recognizing the importance of student voice and agency in the broader school culture, the school implemented student-led assemblies. Initially a uniform format, the assemblies underwent a transformation, evolving into a dynamic and engaging experience. A rotating schedule was established by the students themselves, ensuring that students from all grades had the opportunity to design and lead the assembly. This not only fostered a sense of ownership and responsibility but also provided a valuable platform for students to develop their communication and leadership skills.

Shared Decision-Making:
The principle of distributed leadership extends beyond student assemblies. The school encourages a collaborative approach through weekly staff meetings, where teachers and other staff members come together to share challenges, engage in open discussions, and collectively devise solutions (SDS circle). This fosters a sense of shared ownership and responsibility, ensuring that decisions are made with the collective well-being of the school community in mind.
Amplifying Student Voices:
Two years ago, the school took a significant step towards amplifying student voices by integrating elected student representatives into the school committee’s weekly SDS circle. This inclusion ensures that student perspectives are heard and considered when making crucial decisions that impact the school community. This democratic process empowers students to actively participate in shaping their learning environment and inculcating a sense of ownership over their educational journey.

The Ripple Effect of Student Agency:
The impact of fostering student autonomy extends far beyond the walls of the classroom. Students, like those in Grade 6 and 7, have demonstrated remarkable resourcefulness and collaboration by independently fundraising over INR 50,000 (~700 USD) to go on an educational trip to a historical city. Through a community movie screening, they successfully raised the necessary funds, showcasing their ability to mobilize resources, engage the community, and achieve their goals.
Empowering Self-Directed Learning:
The school further cultivates student autonomy through dedicated self-study periods within the curriculum. During these periods, students exercise agency in their learning by working towards goals derived from project-based assessments. Teachers are just facilitators in this process. As an example, every year in science, classes 6, 7, and 8 participate in a National Children Science Congress research competition. They have six months to independently develop solutions for ecological and environmental problems in their context. This process empowers them to choose their inquiry and utilize a scientific framework of hypothesis generation, observation, experimentation, and proof. This project-based approach not only deepens their understanding of scientific concepts but also fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. Notably, one group has achieved national recognition, and three others have been recognized at the state level, demonstrating the power of student-driven learning in achieving remarkable outcomes.
Beyond the Classroom Walls:
The student union serves as another potent example of student agency in action. Over the past two years, this student-led body has undertaken remarkable initiatives, including constructing a dining area for the students and organizing mixed-gender football matches. These projects involved designing plans, managing budgets, mobilizing resources and fundraising, and employing community members, primarily the parents of the students themselves. The success of these endeavors not only contributed significantly to the school's development but also set a positive example for the wider community. Notably, the organization of mixed-gender football matches, a first-ever occurrence in Majuli, perhaps even Assam, challenged existing social norms and paved the way for a more inclusive sporting culture.
A Community United:
These student-led initiatives have fostered a stronger bond between the Hummingbird School and the surrounding community. By actively engaging with community members, seeking their support, and contributing to the social fabric, students are not only developing valuable life skills but also fostering a sense of mutual respect and collaboration. This synergistic relationship creates a fertile ground for collective growth and progress.

Hummingbird School's core philosophy rests upon the belief that building the agency of its students is crucial for their development as leaders for their community. By nurturing their independence, initiative, and decision-making skills, the school empowers them to take ownership of their learning, become active participants in their community, and ultimately, become architects of positive change in the world around them. This transformative approach prepares them not only to navigate the complexities of the contemporary world but also to become responsible and compassionate leaders who are well-equipped to contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future for themselves and their community.
